There are tons of legitimate reasons to use file hosting. The most common one is to make files you want others to be able to download available, without using your website’s bandwidth and space. Free file hosting is so valuable. The downside with so many of them however is that once the file has been uploaded, you pretty much have no control over it.
Hosted.org is a new free file hosting that can be used to save a back-up of everything from video of your child’s first time walking to your master’s thesis. it is cool site that offers free file hosting with what I think is an interesting twist. You don’t have to create an account or log in to upload a file, and you don’t have to create an account or log in to be able to download a file someone else has uploaded. You just upload the file, get the download URL from hosted.org and make the URL available. The people who choose to download your file get it without a hitch and there’s no cost involved whatsoever! You can share any type of file and can post your download link anywhere you’re able to post links – blogs, websites, message boards, etc. Pretty cool if you ask me. Not many places left that let you host files for download for free!
Simply choose the file you wish to upload, click the “Upload” button, and share your file your file. Hosted.org provides a link that can simply be copied and pasted for ease of transmission amongst friends, colleagues, and family.
It’s a fantastic service when you have a mailing list like friends and family and you want them all to download a zipfile of photos, but after that you want the photos deleted so other people can’t download them. I’m not sure of other free file hosts that also have no ads, or registration so the service can be completely anonymous, and best of all, it’s so quick simply because you don’t need to worry about logging in.
